Mission

Cyborgplant project aims at merging plants with robots. Robotics contributes the necessary complement to increase the adaptability of individual plants to rapidly changing environments. Our project investigates techniques in plant-robot close-loop interactions which can raise the plant adaptability to adverse environmental conditions. We will explore the optimum trade-off at which both parts can get a benefit from their communication, and cast more light onto the science of each.

We explore concepts such as:

          Morphological communication

         Mutual adaptation and decentralized autonomy

         Dynamical coupling

         Plant intelligence

News

October 2011: Cyborgplant project will be presented at the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (http://www.smc2011.org/) by Dominique Cadosch.

September 2010:Cyborgplant project is in the media. Universitat Zurich Magazine talks about Cyborgplant in the issue Nr 3, 19. Jahrgang, September 2010. Check this link to jump to the excerpt on the Cyborplant.

Projects

The project pinpoints the ability of a robot to react in response to  environmental stress in a plant in order to stabilize the state of the plant.  The robotic device monitors the changes in morphology and electrical  activity of the plant. According to these parameters, it classifies the  drought level and triggers irrigation when necessary.

Resources:

Experimental room: The project uses a room with monitored and controlled conditions for the avocado plant.

Avocado breed site: The project has a site for avocado breeding, from where avocados are selected for experiments.
